Neighbourhood Parties

We got together to celebrate the King and Queen's Coronation in May 2023 and had a wonderful bring and share buffet and a collection of excellent crowns.   And in June 2022 we had clear skies and even some sunshine for our Jubilee Party attended by about 200 people.  Thanks to a grant from NCC Cllr Larry Henson, we enjoyed music from the Corby Silver Band and Carly-Jayne of Vocal Chord.  There was a magician, balloon modeller and face painter to keep the children (and adults!) amused and there always seemed to be a queue for Mark Coates (of Paul Harris, Butcher) wonderful burgers and sausages.  People kindly bought plates of food to go with this - and there were some very inventive and beautifully decorated cakes.  The beer ran out, the wine and juice didn't.  We all had a great time, thanks to everyone for the wonderful spirit, great red, white and blue costumes, and to the committee and others who worked very hard behind the scenes to make it all run so smoothly.

Residents Parking Scheme
KBC consulted residents in various areas of Kettering about whether we would like to have a Residents Parking Scheme and if so what form this would take.   The consultation was from 1st to 28th February 2019 and our Councillors, Scott Edwards and Maggie Don, kindly held a meeting on 2nd February to try to answer questions.  The result of that consultation for our area was that 31% of the households wanted residents parking and 31% didn't want residents parking. (34% didn't vote and there are 3% vacant properties).

There was then a further consultation in the autumn to consider whether to have a Residents Parking Scheme covering half Headlands and half of Broadway.  The result of that was that 41% wanted Residents Parking, 25% didn't and 34% didn't reply.   A minimum vote of 60% is required before a change can be considered.

Lighting the Footpath to Thurston Drive

Since March 2019 Kevin has been holding lots of meetings with suppliers, Network Rail etc, regarding a stand-alone wind & solar powered light on the footpath over the railway from Ostlers Way to Thurston Drive.  We have now a grant towards the project and are getting there although the installers have now balked at the project which is causing some grief.  We are determined not to be beaten.

Planning issues
From 1st April 2022 the old planning guidelines will no longer apply and the North Northamptonshire Core Spacial Strategy comes into place.  This does not give enough detail so bascially a developer could do what they like.  However, we now have a Neighbourhood Plan which has been adopted by KTC and some Site Specific Development Plans so that if (for example) the Fire Station were to move, there would be something in place to make sure the developer was contained as to density, number of car park spaces etc.

Noticeboard installed - July 2011
Thanks to funding from NCC Cllr Larry Henson, we have been able to provide a noticeboard outside the butchers in Hawthorn Road.  This will help in communicating with residents.   We even managed to get one of our photos in the ET.   We hope you like the new backing board we put in in October 2023

Polling Station
We were consulted on what the Council probably thought was a given - that the Polling Station be in Hawthorn Road School.   However, thanks to various vociferous parents, the Governors at the School and HARA, the Polling Station was moved to St Michaels' Hall.  This meant no loss of school for the children and the parents didn't have to take another day off work.

Water Flow Issues
Various residents struggled with seriously reduced water flow in 2013. We took up the cudgel and after over six months of badgering, Anglia Water put a second feed into our area from 30 October 2013. Thanks to the 61 residents who gave feedback - I like to think that the threat of our spreadsheet of names and incidences helped.   Thanks also to Committee member Bob Wakefield, who led on this project

Do you have any comments on local issues?
The committee are currently tackling (amongst other things!):
  • litter
  • tackling the parking on double yellow lines on the corners of smaller roads making it impossible for the bus to get round and making sight lines difficult through the parked vehicles
  • iinstalling a stand-alone light on the path from Ostlers Way to Thurston Drive

Please contact one of the committee if you have any ideas on these or any other issues you would like to share.
